Divorce, remarrying, and aging families

Despite marriage being rewarding and fulfilling, there are some situations where marriage doesn’t work as couples would have hoped for. When situations like that arise divorce and separation can be routes that couples tend to take. Reasons for divorce may vary greatly as each family is different. Often when divorce happens and when children are involved, there is a different approach that parents take to make sure that their children get parental involvement from both parents. This causes a difference in approach compared to a nuclear intact family.  There are multiple differences between the nuclear family and a remarried family. One of the major differences is that in remarried families marital and parental tasks are not exclusive to the rem dyad. Parental tasks are shared with the previous spouse whilst in the nuclear family, marital and parental tasks are exclusive to the marital dyad. Another evident difference is that in the nuclear family members belong to only one fa...

Parenting

When thinking of parenting, Heavenly Father (God) comes to mind, the fact that He is a perfect being who loves His children unconditionally and is merciful to them. God`s ultimate purpose is to guide us without compelling us on our path to eternal life. This process is similar to earthly parents; however, the only difference is that earthly parents are there to guide their children, leading by example without compelling them on their journey in mortality. Furthermore, parenting has become increasingly more difficult because of the growing wickedness in the world. I think on top of increasing wickedness, most children have become increasingly stubborn and “bosses” instead of parents. Michael Popkin has by far the best parenting approach called active parenting. He mentioned that instead of being reactive, we have to pay more attention to what the child`s needs are. He said the purposes of parenting are to protect and prepare a child to survive in the world they are living in. Popk...

Fathers and Finances

Before diving into fathers and finance, we need to understand that positive influence from fathers comes when he and his wife are in unity and one accord. Fathers have to understand that if they don’t address anger correctly, they will end up being overcome with that anger. The reality is that they are not fighting against flesh and blood but principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Knowing that they are fighting against the devil and not with each other, helps couples channel their energy to strengthen each other and fight against the adversary. Fathers have a very crucial role in inspiring their children to become great citizens, they need to be role models for their children to shape them for the future. “Without dads as role models, boys’ testosterone is not well channeled,” wrote author Warren Farrell at USA TODAY. “The boy experiences a sense of purposelessness, a lack of boundary enforcement, rudderlessness, and often with...

Communication and Decision-making

Communication is essential to problem-solving and understanding one`s thoughts and opinions, It is essential to convey your thoughts and feelings to others. The message has to be encoded to make it possible for others to decode it. We have to come up with forms of media that can transfer the message. Some forms of media are words, tone, body language. These media forms play a crucial role in effectively transferring the message. People tend to trust the tone more than the words. However non-verbal communication such as body language tends to be trusted more than verbal communication. Interestingly communication mediums have changed over time and how people use them. Initially, before phones came into the picture, people used to communicate more through visiting and introducing themselves, however when phones came, they took over the idea of visiting and talking. It got worse when texting became available because it was easy to do and there was no verbal communication involved. Te...

Mental Health!

Stress is the feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to cope with mental or emotional pressure. It is our body`s response to pressure. Many different situations or life events can cause stress. Stress is often triggered when we experience something new, unexpected, or that threatens our sense of self, or when we feel we have little control over a situation. There is a difference between stress and distress in that stress is a human response shown towards external or psychological stressors, while distress is the emotional state a person encounters when he fails to adapt himself to stressors. It seems like in humans, stress is inevitable! What is interesting is that despite the stress in life, people still risk engaging in stressful situations like riding a rollercoaster, asking someone on a date, public speaking, and getting married despite financial instability. Working against resistance is the most fulfilling experience because you feel a sense of accomplishment when you overco...

Sexual Intimacy!

Sexual intimacy seems to be a sensitive subject, if not the hardest subject to discuss in marriages. Some couples have great sexual intimacy, others have hit rock bottom, oftentimes leading to divorce. Sex can be social and biological. An investigation of the response of the body to sex by Masters and Johnson identified four stages of human sexual response which are excitement, plateau, orgasm, resolution. They mentioned that during the response there are two basic physiological reactions. One involves an increased concentration of blood in bodily tissues in the genitals and the female breast and the other an increase in the nerve and muscles throughout the body. This leads to those four stages that will lead to sexual intimacy. Comparing the two genders; men tend to have a high sex drive compared to women, they tend to think about it, fantasize about it, and desire sexual intercourse more often. This high sex drive can be attributed to how their organs function. Men have testicle...

Capstone or Cornerstone Marriage?

Marriage! The union of two people for a very long time is an important step that any person will take in their life. It takes intention and planning to have a successful marriage. Authenticity is also a requisite principle in having a genuine and fulfilling marriage. When to get married, is an elephant in the building. Some people delay marriage for reasons such as finance and past experiences. On the other hand, some get married very early in their adult life. Lois M. Collins, a member of Deseret News observed two different marriages. She observed that young marriages are called cornerstones marriages because they provide a foundation as partners forge family life and hit some milestones together like education and career together, often struggling financially at the start. On the other hand, Capstone marriages on the other hand involve people who are 25 or older. The term acknowledges that the individuals have already launched and felt ready to cap off accomplishments like educa...
